TOP TEN ALBUMS of 2009

TOP TEN ALBUMZ EPISODE OF ARE FRIENDS ELECTRIC CLICK TO DOWNLOAD

10 - Royksopp – Junior

Glacial slabs rupturing and crackling as melodic analog bombs of fatness cause chasms. But instead of combustion, the physical process of bass boost provides new glacial shelfs, iced over with a diamond sheen. From the light emerges a new race of angelic super-pop androids. Positronic indeed.

Best Seen Live at: In a giant dirigible floating at a brisk pace above greenland ice-scapes.

9 - Bibio – Ambivalence Avenue

70's sunset hairdo. Troubled egos, reaching forward but blocked by the walls of their prison: a subconscious cube which lets out the beautiful distilled selflessness of the combined egos without much of the competitive, daunting facets of egos undistilled by the cube-prisons gossamer walls. Beat dumplings create a delicious sushi picnic.

Best seen live at: A secluded abandoned airport with wildflowers breaking the concrete of the runways.

8 - V/A – KOMPAKT Pop Ambient 2009

Clean like the harmonies of a rainbow. Astral rinse cycle spits out this fantasy-moment like your brains time code being time slowed down by electric shocks. Truly a soundscape craft, the ever-dreaming Kompakt fellows/ladies defy peer-review with this artful, magnificently meticulous compilation.

Best seen live at: A walk through a rural continental meadow.

7 - Knight Rider - Knight Rider

Distorted lens flare guitars, out of this world clipped out drums, vocal and spiritual range between klonopin romance at a county fair (“Dancing Together”) to projecting your astral self visually onto a cliff and feeling the crushing weight of the earths energy unfurl into fungus and roots of trees (“Emilio Estavez”) to a dream-beat concussive in its romance-pulse laced by harmonizing vocal tracks intertwining like crossed fingers hoping for a chance to make out with a space shuttle launch.

Best seen live at: The national air and space museum, Washington, DC

6 - White Rainbow – New Clouds

Translating human understanding to a new benevolent race of super-evolved, intelligent squid that live too deep for light. Specifically trying to communicate to the beautifully colored squid what a cloud looks like. When all at once, the squids begin a ritual dance in their voidish realm, bestowing a gift of immeasurable color : an avalanche of pulsing, piercingly pleasurable rhythmic lights and sounds.

Best Seen Live at: Second Beach, La Push, WA, USA, Clear August Day-turned-Sunset. Stars provide subtle light as night falls.

5 - Sally Shapiro – My Guilty Pleasure

Infinite summer, clear sky, clear night sky, humid in the tall grass but not static. Not a scene, but the entire energy of that summer moment. All the life, all the frogs, the rhythm of all those heartbeats, the insect chatter under different rhythmic schema could be sending us a coded message. Sally Shapiro's firefly representative is the first to let us know, she has tapped an artery of cosmic vitae and released it to the world in the form of this record. Light and poppy instrumentation with a serious subtext, immense subtlety, exotic melodies.

Best seen live at: A pacific island archipelago with all your friends arriving by boat.

4 - Paul White – Sounds from the Skylight

The more I hear this album the more I melt into it like beautiful food. Food is love and this is gold food, soul food. Dilla style beat composition both in form and in the low-end aspect of the content. Sample-weaving at its finest, Paul White doesn't hide his psychadelic nature-lust but blends it perfectly with the cold reality of our technological age and reconciles all facets of electricity. Truly a friend of Electricity.

Best Seen Live at: A planetarium with the seats removed. Psychadelic conduits suggested. Dancing/Gliding shoes/socks required.

3 - Enumclaw – Opening of the Dawn

A satyr bestows upon a weary rural traveller, a lute of whimsy. Florian Fricke appears in a German Castle and grants his blessing to this Traveller to travel forth on the same roads. This traveller is Enumclaw, presumably named after the town in Washington – a rural pasture town at the foot of Mount Rainier. A town which I had the pleasure of working in for two months in spring of 2007. Superb views, awful smells, quirky “downtown.” Anyway, the music/maestro that is Enumclaw is singular in its complete beauty. Soft kraut melodies, focusing on the feeling of immersion into the psychadelic lake of german mysticism. Bohemian syncretization reverts under the polytheistic, pagan weight of this tremendous dreamscape.

Best seen live at: The temple of dendur in the metropolitan museum of art at night.

2 - Washed Out – Life of Leisure

As the title of this record suggests, you will find this album best as a pleasure seeker, but its emotion can sublimate in other ways. There is a pastoral melancholy about it, like a recurring dream about beach temples. With giant decorative balloons bumbling in the seabreeze. The driving, triumphant beat of “You'll See It” provides a perfect syncopated skeleton for the sun-drenched melody and vocal arrangement which includes subtle harmonies recorded on clipped tape, beautifully mastered an all around treat. Changed the course my two-thousand-and-fine life story took. Wish this feeling for all.

Best seen live at: Whipporwill road, Navesink, NJ. Early August evening, firefly bait. Bring friends and loud speakers.

1 - Oneohtrix Point Never – Rifts

The best album of 2009. This 3EP/2CD compilation is a sea of sky wash, emotion flow. Undoubtedly a game changer, this album ruptured my time-space continuum. Not pulling at the subconscious, but rather at the sublime. It catapults your nervous system into its sensory transfer station and the ghost leaves the machine and enters your neural net.

Best Seen Live at: The real internet.

From the KAOS Crypt: Errol G Specter and his Dream Waves - Trystaline Skyway

Another beautiful tape from the KAOS crypt. This time it's the 1987 experimental lsd-space of Errol G Specter's dream waves. Each side is it's own track. The album is called Trystaline Skyway. It's oberon and titania's stress music. Mystic synth lutes provide an eerie stroll through Avalon and the consequential bridge to space, the utter skyway. Utterly.

From the KAOS Crypt: Allied Body - Titanium Wetsuit

Allied Body - Titanium Wetsuit

As music director at KAOS 89.3 FM here in Olympia I often find myself looking at a piece of mystically perplexing music media. Recently I've had the pleasure of listening to a series of old experimental tapes from our "crypt." The crypt is basically where music goes when people stop playing it. Sometimes it ends up as fodder for one of our fundraisers or CD Sales, but inevitably it collects dust and is forgotten. No longer! I am resurrecting some of the precious little gems. Including this weeks: Allied Bodies "Titanium Wetsuit."

Self released by a Mr. Steven Suski in 1998, Allied Body is eerie, cooky, grainy and lo-fi. It features some lo-fi drum machine and synth sounds as well as some more organic creature / plant noises. The album was recorded on a 4-track between 1997 and 1998 in Olympia, WA. Somewhere between the silver apples and a cosmic garage sale, this local artist somehow was mislabed as "indie" (as opposed to "local" a more favorable designation) by a former music director. Truly forgotten, typing Allied Body Titanium Wetsuit into Google yields no result. Any further information on the artist would be lovely!

Enjoy the first tape of many (hopefully) to be posted here. I enjoy track 7 "Combatants."

Jam on,

Weewl

ben jones from paperrad in an interview

My girlfriend and I are constantly debating time travel. Are you one who thinks you can go back and change the future or that that is impossible?

Next time you talk about it with her be like, "how do you think I was able to meet someone as amazing as you..." And then pull out a photograph of a heart, and the heart fades and it's you two underneath the heart with Micheal J Fox between you, but then he fades, and then kiss her and whisper "Doc is in trouble, I am not who you think I am, if you tell anybody about this the world with cease to exist". Then be like "just kidding" and run and smash your head into a mirror and stare at your bloody face laughing.....and hug her and be like, "sorry if I freaked you out" but make the hug just a tad too tight, and then be like "just kidding for real", and be like "look how closer this has made us"...then give her the ring.

"Brain and rhythm! Radio centrally has been since its onstaan in 1980, independently and non-commercial. That last does not want say only " without reclame" but becomes also without the blades which you hear on all other senders nevertheless also already to you of it crazily. We twist no things because that ounce produces money. Radio centrally is unqualifiable. Does not want explore the borders of the radiomaken only, but also to widen. On radio centrally consequently - without publicity - an offer from very several layers of audible sound frequencies. From passie, aversion or curiosity. Very divergent styles of music, we do not only radiate golves also other from a sonorous cosmos concerning the city. Innovating, controversially, shockerend, avant-garde, situationistisch experiment with sound, which gladly does we. Radio does not love side and klare standaardmaaltijden centrally according to fixed recipes. We prepare rather ourselves our costs."

Are Friends Electric? 4.23.09

This weeks episode brings it to a new level. It's all an upward spiral, right? Triumph of the Weewl. Some highly enjoisible moments include the awesome intro, the bodacious layers of funk, the dream-time love-den sound in the middle. Fireflies and thunderstorms, gin and tonics, capital gains tax. Loving every second. Writs of Mandamus served upon yee by my blow'n out sound.

Are Friends Electric? 4.9.2009 - Beach Special

The beach gods have yet to be summoned. I tap my experiences in sultry beach situations from New Jersey and on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula. It was my goal this week to harness their energies for positivity and blessings and warm weather. Living well, ringing bells, palm trees, the bees knees.

Are Friends Electric? 4.2.2009

Feelin' this vibe. Machine drum heavy. Great week emerged from the crumbling feta-cheese smurk. Could have used more poise, but this is my only complaint and it pales. Drunk in the cosmic cabernet. Bumped it all.

"It's easy to rock a party; it's much harder to look out the window" Koze

Process for today

I put on Popnoname's White Album just now and felt my whole day turn around. I'm riding it now, not worried about toxicity. Or overwhelmishness. Loving all beings.

Hushcast number two

Here it is, hushcast number two:

CHLL PLL - Pass out - Children of sailboat dwellers in china sea, Swelling of the worlds oceans, popul vuh meets the continent of Africa meets the psychadelic smell swirls one experiences under the influence of Ambien.

Girls - Morning Light - Highschool in NJ driving to the beach, seriousness of contemplation, rolling down hills listening to Loveless.

Nas - Nas is Like - The beginning and end, can't get real, DJ Premier destroying all other beatmakers with his virtuosic melodies

Swayzak - Smile and Receive (Apparat mix) - Circular dancing on a seaside cliff under a lagoon of perfect sky with a deafening breeze muting the beat in intervals, french kissing crescendo, hitting a cascade of speed ramps in a racing video game

Primal Scream - Higher than the Sun - Cataloging the stories of a night of acid visions then realizing the cid hasn't worn off, bonfire dance pants, seeing a trail behind a snap-dance-wrist.

Farben - The Videoage (Re-Edit) - Categorizing dionysian revelry, train through iceland, gin and tonics in germany or zurich very late at night

Swayzak - Speedboat - Dancing on top of Angel Falls, Infinite Casino Zone from Sonic 2, planetarium discotheque.

Nathan Fake - Basic Mountain -the drive from Snoqualmie Falls to Seattle passing through the I-90 Tunnel at sunset on an august day - windows open, unprompted unison clapping in a grocery store leading to movement into the outdoors, the change of time-perspective due to downhill bike riding.

Neil Young - Sedan Delivery - Any which way but loose, the triumph of the many: drunk in public, the harmony of rural angst - "making love in the milky way."

Kalabrese - Hide - Spring pretend games, behind daffodils, flirtatious glances exhanged between flora.

Are Friends Electric? 3.26.09

This weeks episode was truly a pinnacle in robot/human interfacing. I blended all that shit while dancing in the studio. A lot of great new stuff. It's like animal spirits exerting their will on our world from the astral plane. I love you.

I usually play a lot of Kompakt, but this episode especially. We just got our first Kompakt record, ever, at KAOS - Gui Boratto's effervescent new release "Take My Breath Away."

Hushcast number one

Oneohtrix Point Never - Behind the Bank sounds like: walking on a forest path, introspective harmony, finding gems

DJ Assault - Technofreak sounds like: if Streets of Rage jumped out of the Sega Genesis and teleported you to detroit, excellent well drinks, inertia of booty

Big Tymers - Get High (ft. Jazze Pha) sounds like: the truth, trembling under the weight of genius, getting krunk w/friends

Hatchback - Lotus and the Robot sounds like: sun beams pouring onto the ocean through clouds, driving along the coast, honeysuckles

Thomas Fehlmann - Interstellar sounds like: flying lotus/jdilla, cascading booty, exiting the club after dropping acid

Svenson - La Blaza sounds like: being stressed about packing contraband, cigarettes in Rennes, grizzled brawler getting a striptease

Are Friends Electric? 3.19.2009

This weeks episode is dank with material excess. Depeche Mode sullenness, poppy giddup, a moment of spicy funk and then the washed out breath of wind. It's a quartered artichoke heart, in the sandwich of my heart.

Please Enjoy

Introduction

The question is the same, but it has a new home. Welcome to Celestial Vibration. The new home of Are Friends Electric? my weekly radio show on KAOS, 89.3 FM, Olympia, WA. I had previously been using Facebook notes to send little messages, in little bottles; this will be more consistent. More thorough. You can subscribe to the RSS feed on the right hand side and be updated with my most recent posts.

Celestial Vibration is named after various outputs by Edward Larry Gordon, the prolific ambient, experimental creator. It is important to note that my selections of music are largely influenced by my friends, and in fact, is in many ways a collage of their tastes. Bryan Fordney is unquestionably the most influential of my companions and I am convinced by each of our correspondences, that he is my musical doppleganger, not to say that he's copping my style - far from it. So much props to all my pals.

I hope that, along with Are Friends Electric?, I can begin to catalog some of my other endeavors and I hope you won't mind the fluff.
